Golf Carts Now Legal On Belleville Roads

After more than a year of public discussion and research, with the Belleville City Council and Mayor all in favor of exploring the idea, it is now legal to drive golf carts on the majority of streets in the City of Belleville.

The catch is that legalized carting kicks off with an initial 12-month trial period, which means that Belleville and visitors of the lake will need to be on their best behavior to make this a permanent situation.

“This is a great step forward for Belleville,” remarks Jeremiah Beebe, the chief proponent and researcher of the Belleville Golf Cart Plan, as he tunes up his cart in his driveway in downtown Belleville, “ I’m generally for anything that adds value to Belleville, keeps people here in town and away from the strip malls to the north.”

Properly outfitted carts can drive along with regular traffic on all City of Belleville roads minus Main Street, Huron River Dr. and Savage Rd. These larger thoroughfares may be crossed by a golf cart in order to connect the streets where they are legal. It is not legal to drive carts on sidewalks and grassy areas.

The Belleville Beat is keen to hear from you about your initial experiences in and around these carts. Let’s all work together to ensure a safe and sustained kick-off to carting, so that everyone can enjoy the opportunity to cruise in the open air and feel like we’re on Putin Bay or Catalina.

So.... don’t screw this up, Belleville! Let’s ride with respect!
